I LOVE wabi-sabi, and elements of it feature heavily in the Tropicasa design aesthetic! If you've never heard of it before, let me tell you a little bit about it!
What is wabi-sabi?
Wabi-sabi is an elegant Japanese philosophy and aesthetic that can help us find a more connected way of living. It is the antidote to the fast, high-stress pace of life and unrealistic pursuit of perfection that is so prevalent now!
Its focus on authenticity encourages us to search for the beauty in imperfection and impermanence, to be more connected to nature and to embrace the natural cycle of life.
It is the opposite of the westernised idolisation of perfection and artificial beauty - it turns away from the cookie-cutter showroom aesthetic to embrace a lived-in, authentic feel and collections of items that are used and treasured every day.
Celebrating the elements of raw textures and showcasing the beauty of substances in their most natural and raw forms is at the heart of this design aesthetic - this has an incredibly profound effect on reducing stress and feeling calm and happy!
3 tips for incorporating wabi-sabi design in your home
1 - Embrace a neutral, earthy colour palette! The calming effect that this has on the nervous system is unparalleled, and using this a base colour palette gives you the freedom to add accents of bold colours that add energy and vibrance to the room.
2 - Avoid shiny things that reflect light. Anything that causes glare makes our eyes and nervous system feel more stressed (often completely subconsciously), so choose matte textures and natural fibres instead!
3 - Celebrate handmade items that have beautiful imperfections. This is a wonderful way to support local creative businesses as well as adding personality and authenticity to your home, and there's nothing like having your morning coffee in a cute little handmade ceramic cup!
2 Tropicasa design elements I LOVE
1 - Big, textured vases! The curvy shapes of them help us feel relaxed, and they're the perfect way to fill an empty corner.
2 - De-clutter your home! Clutter is the enemy of peace and relaxation, so get rid of things you don't use or don't love. Find some creative, aesthetically pleasing storage solutions, using rattan baskets or vintage chests is a nice way to store things out of sight.

1 FUN LIFE UPDATE:
I'm currently staying in Ao Nang, Thailand and absolutely loving it! I'm staying in a cute little hut which is 30 minutes walk from the beach, getting lots of art done and spending lots of time eating mangos on the beach! I've got an artist friend coming to join me tomorrow for the last 2 weeks of my trip, and we're planning on doing lots of art together and some scuba diving which I'm really excited about.
After that it's back to Melbourne for a while, which I'm looking forward to but also feeling not quite ready for this trip to end! It's going to be so nice seeing all my friends and family again though, so I'm focusing on that and on really soaking up the last 2 weeks of my trip.
Don't forget to book your free, 15 minute discovery call to see how we can transform your home into a space that has a positive effect on your mental wellness and helps you be your most authentic self!
With sunlight and warmth,
